Didn't look anything like Dachau or camp. Have to move car because I'm blocking the entrance. By time I get back it is flooded with school kids. Many groups of school kids, heard one group speaking English. Went through museum but not too interesting as everything is in German. Walked out to the crematorium and then the barracks. Left there with plans to head east for Salzburg, Austria. Left Dachau going wrong way so decided to go to Innsbruck, Austria instead. Doesn't matter, I'm on vacation and very flexible. Head south. Beautiful mountains with snow on the tops. Finally saw a small cafe so made a u-turn and passed it again so made another u-turn and made it this time. Can't read menu so cook points to food and I picked something in a pan that looked like a small loaf of bread. He said it was meat. Asked if I wanted french fries or potatoes. I say potatoes. Like everything else here you do and then pay. You pump gas and then pay. You stay in hotel and then pay when leaving. You eat first and then pay when done. Small cafe, no tables inside, must eat outside at picnic table looking at snow topped mountain across the street. While paying I ask cook about post office. Just across street and down hill, so I walk over and it is closed from noon 'til 2:30 and it is now 1 p.m. I'm going to carry these cards back home. Bought them five days ago but don't know how much postage to put on them. Get back in car and head south, get to Austria and they have guards at the border, all they do is look at you and wave you through, don't even stop, just slow to about 5 mph and he motions you on. Drove through Austria for 1/2 hour or 45 minutes. Went down one steep mountain and thought it will be fun climbing up the other side but there never was an up hill. Came back to Germany and drove past my room to get to the nearest town to buy some post cards and t-shirt before I leave. Walk ALL over town and no shops selling tourist things. This must be the only city in Germany that doesn't cater to tourists. Make it back to pension and see car with Oregon license plates. Wonder how he got his car here. LAST NIGHT!!!! Wednesday May 14, 1997 Got up about 6:45 a.m. Packed up and loaded car. Then went inside to have breakfast. Met older couple from Oregon. They shipped their car over several years ago and leave it with a friend all winter. They arrive in April or May and drive around Europe and go home in November. Paid 94 marks, about $59, for two nights stay. Drove all the way to the airport and didn't see gas station so drove right through airport and went out on small road to look for gas. Drove about eight miles before found one and headed back to airport. Checked in car and lugged baggage upstairs to terminal. Plane left late due to heavy traffic. From Munich to Amsterdam talked to mountain climbing gear salesman. Had two hour layover but time went fast as you need to walk across airport, go through security and start loading 40 minutes before take off. Took 747 across the ocean. 7 hour and 40 minutes. Talked to retired school teacher and her husband who had been in Italy. They were from Terre Haute Indiana. Stewardess came by every hour with food or drink. Watched free movie. Was raining and around 50 degrees in Amsterdam at 3:20 p.m. when we left. Was raining and about 50 degrees in Detroit at 5 p.m. when we arrived. Tried to call Alma but it was long distance and didn't have enough change. Had another two hour layover but had same walk across airport and 1/2 hour loading time. Watched movie and ate again on flight to Phoenix. Was 99 degrees when landed at 8:20 p.m. Walked back and forth across airport looking for Super Shuttle. Finally got one. Took 18 hours from time got on airplane in Munich until landed in Phoenix. Came home and called Mom. Bored her for 2 1/2 hours about trip. I had been up for 27 hours without any sleep. Went to bed shortly after midnight but woke up before 5 a.m. so went up on roof and got the swamp cooler working. Did a load of colored clothes and went back to bed. Slept another couple hours. Got up and started unloading bags.
